Diabetes brings along with itself a plethora of associated problems like Nerve Damage (Diabetic Neuropathy) and Poor Blood Circulation. Neuropathy can lead to painful, numb or insensitive feet.

Minor foot injuries may not be felt, which, if not attended for a long time, can lead to Foot Ulcers. Thus, foot care is extremely important for diabetic patients.

We bring the most important tips you can follow to keep your feet healthy.

Check your feet daily

You should inspect your feet daily and get a foot examination from a podiatrist periodically. If you find any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or nail problems on the foot, do not attempt any domestic first aid and consult your doctor immediately. Have corns or calluses treated by a podiatrist.

Clean and moisturize your feet everyday

You should keep your feet clean by gently washing them daily only with lukewarm water, then dry carefully and thoroughly, especially between the toes. Moisturize the feet with skin lotion avoiding between your toes. If your feet become too sweaty, consider using an antiperspirant on the soles of feet.

Protect your feet

You should never walk barefoot to avoid any cuts/scratches etc. Protect your feet by wearing clean & dry socks (you can choose socks made specifically for people with diabetes). Choose comfortable shoes and make sure it doesn’t hurt in any way. Protect your feet from hot and cold temperatures.

Intensive care for your toenails

Take extreme care while cutting toenails. Trim your toenails straight across and file the edges with a nail file. Do not cut them too short and in case of any concerns, avoid “Bathroom Surgery” and directly see a doctor.

Avoid sitting for longer duration

Sitting is the new age smoking. It leads to microvascular damage and reduces blood flow through veins from legs towards heart. Remember, diabetic foot complications can be avoided with proper cautious care and regular checkups.

Keep a check at your diabetes

Lastly, but most importantly, take control of your blood sugar levels, quit smoking and exercise daily to improve blood circulation.
