Root canal treatment: Saving Tooth!

Your teeth are meant to last a lifetime. Years ago, diseased or injured teeth were usually pulled. Today? A tooth can often be saved through root canal (endodontic) treatment.

Inside each tooth is the pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissues dies. If you don’t remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Then the dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile!

When tooth needs root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is needed for two main reasons:

• Infection to the pulp
• Irreversible damage to the pulp

What does the treatment involve?

Treatment often involves from one to three visits. During treatment, general diseased pulp is removed. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.

When properly restored, a tooth with a root canal filling can last for many years. But, like any other tooth, it can become decayed or fractured or the tissue around it can get gum disease. Daily cleanings and regular dental exams will help keep your mouth healthy, whether you’ve had root canal treatment or not.
