With the winter season comes all we love: cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, fireplaces, and the holidays! But unfortunately winter weather is not fun for skin. The blustery season of autumn arrives with many skin and hair problems.

Cold weather not only takes away the moisture from the air but also from the skin. Without immediate care, dry skin can lead to cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter wind makes the problem worse. Indoor heat further robs the layer of moisture.

Loss of humidity in environment accompanies with absorption of moisture from skin leading to dry skin. Additional moisture helps, but you need to do more to actually counteract these effects and keep skin looking youthful and smooth.

Hot water baths are a no-no

Hot showers and baths always feel good in the winter but it deteriorates the upper skin layer by depleting oil. While washing face and hands prefer using lukewarm water. Also try and limit your bath for 10 mins.

Moisturize. Repeat.

Low humidity takes away the moisture from your skin. Your skin not only needs moisture but also right after bath. It can be applied up to 3 times per day. People with cracked heels can wear socks after moisturizing to promote healing. A lip balm or petroleum jelly should be applied at regular intervals for chapped lips.

People with dry skin on palms can repeatedly moisturize their hands after every hand wash. Coconut oil can be a substitute for moisturizer. Go for an oil-based rather than a water-based solution, as it’s more likely to help your skin retain moisture in the winter.

Protect thy skin

Wear gloves and cover your face while stepping out of your house. Winter winds are as harsh as sun for exposed skin areas. Try to use a sunscreen as sun allergies are common in dry skin.

Water is your bestie

We tend to drink less water in winters as the consumption of hot beverages increases but remember that the skin needs hydration inside out. It’s not just the outer moisturization but also inside hydration.

Eating right

Eating foods high in water content can help hydrate your skin from the inside out. Eating fruits help us to retain our natural glow on skin. Make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin.

Also consider omega-3 supplement, or consume more fatty fish and flax seed to give your skin the building blocks it needs to appear supple and smooth.

Consult your doctor

Not all dry skins are usual winter skin condition, many a times it can be some serious skin diseases like Psoriasis. In case of too dry or itchy skin, instead of all the home made remedies taken, consult your dermatologist.

Pearls of wisdom

Good hygiene habits with proper diet lead to soft and supple skin whatever the season may be.
