Overview

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that are visible through the skin. They are often blue or dark purple in color and can be seen on the legs, although they can also occur in other parts of the body. Varicose veins are caused by damaged valves in the veins that allow blood to flow in the wrong direction, causing the veins to become swollen and distorted. Varicose veins are common and can cause symptoms such as aching, swelling, and fatigue in the legs. They are usually not a serious medical concern, but can be unsightly and cause discomfort. Varicose veins can often be treated with lifestyle changes, such as wearing compression stockings and avoiding standing or sitting for long periods of time, and with medical procedures such as sclerotherapy or laser ablation.

Treatments

Sclerotherapy and laser ablation are two medical procedures that can help treat varicose veins. In sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the vein, causing it to scar and close. In laser ablation, a laser is used to seal the vein. These procedures are often done in a doctor’s office or outpatient setting and may be done with the use of local anesthesia.

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected veins. There are several types of surgery that can be used to treat varicose veins, including traditional vein stripping, endovenous laser treatment, and radiofrequency ablation.

The specific treatment plan will depend on the severity of the varicose veins and the individual patient. It is important to speak to a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
